David W. Slaughter is currently Of Counsel to Snow, Christensen & Martineau (offices in Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah) where he previously served as a Director, President and Board Chairman. Mr. Slaughter took an 18-month leave of absence from his firm to serve an 18-month mission with his wife, Connie, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from February 2016 to July 2017.

After graduating from BYU in 1975, Mr. Slaughter served three years’ active duty as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, and returned to school in 1978, earning his J.D. (magna cum laude) in 1981 from the J. Reuben Clark Law School (Brigham Young University), where he was Lead Articles Editor of the BYU Law Review, and its Lead Articles Editor from 1980-81. Mr. Slaughter joined his present firm in 1982 following a one-year clerkship with Judge Malcolm R. Wilkey on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Mr. Slaughter’s law practice centers in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, with particular emphasis on complex commercial disputes, construction, surety and fidelity matters, and intellectual property and trade secrets litigation. He is also primary counsel and consultant to a number of national and international companies. He has served as a mediator or arbitrator in construction and commercial disputes for over 25 years and is a panel arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association.

He is a member of the American Bar Association and Utah State Bar. He has also been actively involved in community and ecclesiastical service and has served as a member of the Sandy City (Utah) Public Utilities Citizens Advisory Board since 1995 (chairman after 2003) to 2016. He has lectured before local and national professional organizations and has authored several papers dealing with construction and surety law and other topics, including the following:

Author of the Utah Chapter of FIFTY STATES CONSTRUCTION LIEN AND BOND LAW, published by Aspen Law & Business, 1988 (with yearly updates);Author of Utah Chapter of PAYMENT BOND MANUAL, published by the American Bar Association, 1991; Author of “The Contract Bond Surety’s Performance as a Condition Precedent to its Rights of Subrogation (Beyond a Twiddling of Thumbs)”, SUBROGATION RIGHTS OF THE CONTRACT BOND SURETY, published by the American Bar Association, 1991. “The Preliminary Injunction as a Tool for Preserving and Enforcing the Surety’s Rights: Does It Work? (Dealing with the Sometimes Short Arm of the Law)”, 1995; “Payment Claims Under Performance Bonds: Is the Back Door Still Open?”, 1996; “Indemnitor Claims of Surety Bad Faith: New Grounds for a Bitter Cup?”, 1997, all published as part of seminar course materials by the Western States Surety Conference; and “When the City Cries (For) Uncle: A Surety Industry Primer on Chapter 9 Municipal Debt Adjustment,” presented to the Pearlman Association 2008. Mr. Slaughter is also a contributing author to 2008 ABA publication, “The Surety’s Indemnity Agreement: Law and Practice, 2nd Ed.”

His and his wife, Connie, have three sons and eight grandchildren.

Rate: $400/hr. Will also provide conference rooms for mediation or arbitration venue if needed.
